UDF wins 17 seats in December 10 bypolls to local body wards
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) has suffered a setback with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) winning 17 of 31 wards in the December 10 byelections held in local body wards.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won three wards.
In the 31 wards, the UDF increased its tally from 13 to 17 while the LDF score dipped from 14 to 11.
The Congress wrested the Palakkal North ward in the Thevalakkara grama panchayat and Poongode in the Chadayamangalam grama panchayat in Kollam district, Gokhale ward in the Nattika grama panchayat (Thrissur), Karuvambram in the Manjeri municipal council, Malappuram, and Eruva in the Pathiyoor grama panchayat (Alappuzha) from the CPI(M).
A UDF-backed Independent helped the UDF retain the Kuzhiveli ward in the Erattupetta municipal council in Kottayam district.
The CPI(M) wrested the Thettumuri ward in the Kunnathur grama panchayat (Kollam) from the BJP, and Koyivila South in the Thevalakkara grama panchayat (Kollam), and Perumukku in the Alamkode panchayat (Kannur) from the Congress.
The State Election Commission has directed all candidates who contested in the bypolls to submit their election expenditure within 30 days to the secretaries of the local bodies concerned.
