Awareness rally marks Energy Conservation Week in Vijayawada
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM) launched the National Energy Conservation Week-2024 celebrations on Saturday (December 14) with a rally in Vijayawada from district Collector’s camp office to Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium.
Students, government officials and other people participated in the rally, which was organised in collaboration with AP power distribution companies and district administration across all districts in the State.
NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha, along with chief general manager (CGM-Operations and Maintenance), Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Corporation Limited (APCPDCL) Sambasiva Rao, general manager (Energy Audit), APCPDCL, Vijaya Krishna and Superintending Engineer (SE-Operations), Vijayawada, Murali Mohan inaugurated the event at the municipal stadium.
Addressing the participants, Mr. Lakshmisha emphasised the importance of energy efficiency and conservation, highlighting that these efforts would yield significant results for both individuals and institutions. He encouraged students to judiciously use the electrical appliances in their homes and adopt simple energy-saving measures such as utilising natural lighting, ventilation and energy-efficient appliances like BEE star-rated ones.
He said this campaign of Energy Conservation Week-2024 would help spread awareness among households and students on energy conservation and energy efficiency. He also stressed on PM Surya Ghar Scheme and said NTR district is putting all out efforts in implementing the scheme by involving self-help groups and officials. He made an appeal to the general public to register for PM Surya Ghar that helps promote renewable energy and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.
On power consumption, Mr. Sambasiva Rao encouraged people to opt for electric vehicles and spoke elaborately about the Centre’s Urjaveer programme, an initiative by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), which empowers grassroots level low-income citizens to participate in the promotion of energy-efficient appliances.
Mr. Vijaya Krishna emphasised key factors such as sustainability and energy conservation, water conservation and alternative energy sources such as solar, wind and green hydrogen.
Sri Murali Mohan urged households and students to adopt energy-saving practices in their daily lives, use electrical appliances judiciously and opt for star rated appliances.
A few schoolchildren shared their thoughts on the significance and importance of energy conservation. A quiz was conducted with active participation of the students, and, later, the winners received prizes from the Collector.
