The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday (November 29, 2024) filed the first chargesheet in the corruption and financial irregularities case in R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Former principal Sandip Ghosh and student leader Ashish Pandey are among the five named in the chargesheet.

The CBI has filed a 125-page chargesheet, after recording witness statements of over 100 people. The probe agency also submitted over 500 pages of supporting documents. The chargesheet was filed at the Alipore District and Sessions Court (Judges Court) on November 29. Three more people have been named in the chargesheet. The CBI officials had previously arrested vendors Biplab Sinha and Sumon Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan, a security guard of Mr. Ghosh, in relation to financial irregularities. They were all named in the chargesheet.

Akhtar Ali, former Deputy Superintendent of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital was the first person to complain about the financial irregularities. He had stated in his allegations that Sandip Ghosh showed favouritism in selecting vendors for hospital supplies. He also alleged that Mr. Ghosh used to award tenders worth crores of rupees to non-eligible parties after taking bribes.

Sandip Ghosh was the first person to be arrested on September 2, 2023, in the financial irregularities case. Ashish Pandey, who was known to be a “close aide” of Mr. Ghosh and was accused of “indulging in the threat culture at R.G. Kar”, was the last to be arrested on October 3.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) had also lodged a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Mr. Ghosh to probe the money laundering accusations that surfaced against him during the investigation process.

The financial irregularities case is being investigated in parallel to the rape and murder case at R.G. Kar Hospital. The primary accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer, is being tried in that case.
