The incident occurred at the resort at Peribail, Battappady Cross Road in Someshwara village, around 10.05 a.m., the police said in a release.

The three had checked in at the resort on November 16. The resort belongs to one Manohar V. Puthran, the police said.

CCTV footage showed that after getting into the water, one of the girls first catches a life buoy and later pushes it away and returns to the low depth area. The same girl later swims to the middle of the pool and starts drowning. Another girl who tries to save the first too drowns. The third girl who tries to save the other two also drowns.

No lifeguard

Sources said that there was no lifeguard at the swimming pool, and its depth varied from about four ft to six ft.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Mangaluru sub-division, S. J. Harshavardhana, said that the trade licence and tourism registration certificate of the resort had been suspended. Authorities closed the resort after the incident.

While temporarily cancelling the registration certificate issued on December 3, 2022, the Deputy Director of Tourism Department said that it appeared from preliminary findings that the resort did not take any safety measures. The certificate had been cancelled taking the safety of tourists into account.

In the notice to the owner, the Chief Officer of Someshwar Town Municipal Council said that the trade licence issued on June 13, 2024 had been cancelled as the resort did not take any safety measures near the pool, which resulted in the death of the three women.
