10 prison staff including Assistant Jailer suspended for failure to curb contraband 

As many as 10 prison staff including an Assistant Jailer and a Deputy Jailer in the Sub-Jail, Poonamallee were placed under suspension for their failure to prevent mobile phone use and ganja in the premises.

Prison Department sources said the action was taken following an inspection conducted by a special team and seizure of five mobile phones and 34 grams of ganja from remand prisoners. On the orders of the Additional Director General Police and Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Maheshwar Dayal.

An Assistant Jailer, a Deputy Jailer, two Chief Head Warders, two Grade I Warders and four Grade -II Warders are in the list of prison staff who were suspended. The suspended staff were working on deputation basis from other stations at the sub-jail. At present, the prison has 46 inmates.

Immediately after the suspension of 10 staff, other staff from Central Prison, Puzhal and other places were deployed to handle the prison.
