Coimbatore District police give special focus to curb circulation of ‘Cool Lip’
by Wilson Thomas · The HinduThe Coimbatore District (Rural) Police have intensified efforts to curb circulation of one of the brands of banned tobacco products in Tamil Nadu, which is also said to be used widely by school and college students.
Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan said special focus was given to cut the sale and supply chain of ‘Cool Lip’, a tobacco product that came in small pouches and was kept under lip for a high.
“Recent seizures of the product and its circulation have indicated that its usage among students is high. The police have intensified efforts to curb their circulation in the district since its addiction might prompt students to explore other similar products or drugs,” said Mr. Karthikeyan.
In one of the recent drives, the district police seized 92 kg of banned tobacco products, including Cool Lip from the limits of the Alandurai police station on Monday. The police were on the lookout for two persons, who stored the contraband substances.
In another case, the Chettipalayam police seized 210 kg of prohibited tobacco products and arrested a man on November 23.
The police have also taken serious note of the recent observations by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on the use of Cool Lip among students and the directions issued by the court to the Central and the State governments.
According to the police, students preferred this particular tobacco product as it came in small pouches and it was convenient to be used without getting noticed by teachers or others. Adults also used the product for the same reason while gutkha or pan masala need to be chewed and spit, they said.
