A tsunami mock drill was held in the coastal village of Valiyaparamba on Wednesday (December 11).

Organised by the Kasaragod District Disaster Management Authority in collaboration with Valiyaparamba grama panchayat and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), the event offered a rare glimpse into the coordinated efforts required during a disaster.

The drill, held in the 10th ward of the panchayat, began with a warning announcement at 3 p.m., simulating the onset of a Tsunami. In an unprecedented exercise, over a hundred people were swiftly evacuated from their homes and the seashore to a designated relief camp at Becharakadavu Madrasa. The sight of the organised mass evacuation and the synergy among various agencies was both a spectacle and education for the crowd that had gathered to witness the event.

The operation brought together multiple agencies, including the police, Fire and Rescue Services, Coastal police, Revenue, Motor Vehicles, Fisheries, and Health departments. Specialised rescue teams, Apta Mitra volunteers, and the Panchayat Disaster Response Force played pivotal roles in the drill.

Senior officials, including Sub-Collector Pratik Jain and Additional District Magistrate P. Akhil assessed the operations. Panchayat president V.V. Sajeevan led the logistical arrangements.
