Seven die in a fire break out at a single-storey building in Mumbai’s Chembur 

All the seven members from a family died on Sunday morning in a fire breakout in a ground floor shop

At least seven members of a family, including three children, died in a fire break out on Sunday. The fire that broke out on the ground floor of a multi-storey building, caused due to an allegedly short circuit accident in Mumbai’s Siddharth Colony, K.N. Gaikwad Marg, Chembur East on Sunday (October 6, 2024).   

According to preliminary information received from civic officials from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation [BMC], the incident took place at around 5.20 a.m.     

The fire started in a shop on the ground floor that housed electrical items such as electric wiring and electric installation and eventually spread to other household appliances. The fire later spread to the upper floor, where all the seven family members resided, informed the BMC officials.  

Assistant medical officer, Dr Ajit Kumar from Rajawadi Hospital said that all the seven victims were declared brought dead to the hospital.   

The victims have been identified as Presi Prem Gupta [6-year-old girl],Manju Prem Gupta [30-year-old woman], Anita Dharmdev Gupta [39-year-old woman], Prem Chediram Gupta [30-year-old man], Narendra Gupta [10-year-old boy], Vidhi Chediram Gupta [15-year-old girl], and Gitadevi Dharamdev Gupta [60-year-old woman].  

Hemraj Singh Rajput, DCP Zone 6 from Chembur police station said, “The family used to reside on the other two floors above the ground floor while the shop was on the ground floor. At 6 a.m., we received the information. Apart from the seven people from the family, there were two people who were sleeping in the shop on the ground floor, luckily, they escaped. The police department along with the fire brigade team is investigating the exact cause of the fire.”
