Repeated questions and options in Periyar University question paper; SFI demands action
by M. Sabari · The HinduIn the semester exam conducted for second-year M.A. Economics students at Periyar University, some of the questions were repeated and wrong options were given for some questions in the Advanced Macro Economics paper that was held on Wednesday. The Students Federation of India (SFI) has demanded action against officials concerned on Thursday.
Over 30 students appeared for the Advanced Macro Economics paper. In the one-mark questions, question number 5, “Why is the long run supply curve for labour in the aggregate supply hypothesis is vertical?” was repeated as question number 6. The university provided options as Karal Marx, Keynes, Robert Lucas, and John Muth for question no. 5 and the correct options were given in question no. 6. Likewise, in the 15th question, “Which one of the following included in the structure of balance of payment?” The current account option was provided twice and no other option was provided.
SFI district secretary S. Pavithran said the question paper was framed outside and it was verified by three university staff before it was sent for circulation. However, the staff failed to identify the mistakes and the scrutinising committee and controller of examinations also failed to see it. The staff signed the question papers without noticing the mistakes, he alleged and demanded departmental action against the staff who verified the question paper.
The university should also provide grace marks for these three questions to the students. If the university failed to provide grace marks and take action against the faculty members, SFI would lead a protest soon, he said.
Officials attached with the CoE office said the students or SFI did not bring this issue to their knowledge, and steps would be taken to sort it out and the welfare of the students would be ensured, officials added.
