by · Manchester Evening News

A man aged in his 50s has been arrested by murder squad detectives after the death of a man in Rochdale.

A woman in her 40s who was arrested on suspicion of murder, meanwhile, has been released on police bail as investigations continue, Greater Manchester Police said in an update on Thursday night.

The man was held today on suspicion of murder after a man was found unresponsive following a 'disturbance' at the Edington flats in Lower Falinge, Rochdale, on Monday.

A GMP spokesperson said: "CPR was performed on the man in his 50s at the scene, but despite the best efforts of the officers and emergency medical responders, the man sadly died." he hasn't been named.

The man under arrest, who also hasn't been named, remained in custody on Thursday night for questioning, GMP added. The force has previously referred to a 'targeted attack'.

A white forensics screen was stretched across the entrance of a flat on a first floor walkway in Edington, with officers stationed outside as several police cars lined the road on Tuesday morning.

Detectives were seen going door-to-door as the shocked community woke to the scene.

One resident told the M.E.N.: "Last night we heard a lot of banging and noise around 9.45pm to 10pm. I took my kids to bed and then we heard that. It was like somebody was trying to break the roof, banging with something. My husband came in and the police came around 10.30pm. That neighbour is not well so we were thinking he was having some issue, but this was different."

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Andy Naismith said on Thursday: "Investigations are continuing into the sad death of this man in his 50s, we have been in constant contact with his family and kept them up to speed on developments.

"We are still urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to get in touch with us by calling 101 and quoting log 3748 of 21/10/2024. You can also report information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111."
