Bus driver 'turned blue' after crashing double decker into low bridge

A bus driver 'turned blue' in shock after driving a double decker into a low-level bridge in Bolton. Fortunately, no passengers were aboard the Bee Network service which ended up wedged under the bridge.

The drama happened on Weston Street in Bolton on Tuesday morning. It is believed the bus was returning to a depot and witnesseds said there were no passengers on board. The road had to be closed while a rescue crew removed the bus.

Bee Network is investigating the crash alongside the bus operator.

Eye-witness Arfan Khan told the Manchester Evening News: "I head this noise and I looked up and the bus was under the bridge. It was like screeching and banging and glass breaking. The driver was in absolute shock and panicking. He turned purple and blue. I really felt for him."

The image was posted on the Our Bolton Facebook page where many people saw the funny side of the incident. "You can't park there pal," wrote Luke Enty. "You don't normally see a bus delivering a bridge," posted John Rushton.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 10am yesterday (Tuesday 26 November 2024), we were called to reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision on Weston Street in Bolton.

"No injuries were reported and there were temporary road closures in place."

Stephen Rhodes, Director of Bus at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: "On Tuesday (26 November) at around 10am, we received reports that a Bee Network bus had collided with a bridge on Weston Street in Bolton.

"The bus was not in service at the time and there were no passengers on board. While no one was hurt, we are naturally concerned about the incident and are investigating the circumstances of the collision with the operator.”
