Man fighting for life after 'disturbance' as police tape off pub in Bury

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being seriously hurt during a 'disturbance' in Bury.

The Swan Hotel in Tottington has been closed all day in connection with the incident. Now Greater Manchester Police have said that officers were called to Tottington Road to reports of a 'disturbance' at about 11.30pm last night.

A man said to be aged in his late 40s had suffered serious injuries. The force said the injuries are believed to be 'life-threatening'.

Police said arrests have been made in connection with the incident, but no further details have yet been revealed. GMP said an investigation is ongoing.

Pub bosses had issued a statement on Facebook confirming that it was closed due to a 'police incident'. They issued a further statement tonight stating that the pub would re-open tomorrow.

A GMP spokesperson said: "On Saturday 16 November at around 11.30pm we received a report of a disturbance on Tottington Road in Bury. Officers attended and located a man in his late 40s who was taken to hospital with serious injuries, he remains there for treatment to what is believed to be life-threatening injuries.

"Arrests have been made in relation to the incident, and enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information that may help detectives are asked to call 101 quoting log number 3430 of 16/11/24."

A neighbour who lives close to the pub said they had heard 'arguing' before midnight, and said that the police had remained there ever since. Another resident said they had returned home to find a large police presence.

He said: "I came home at about 12.30pm. There was at least five vans there. Forensics were also there and they came back in the morning.

"It must be something bad if they’re still there. I heard it was a fight or something like that." Another nearby resident said they had been unable to retrieve their vehicle from the pub's car park due to the ongoing investigation.
