Carnage on the school run as Mercedes ploughs into bus stop

by · Manchester Evening News

Commutes descended into chaos this morning (November 7) as a black Mercedes ploughed into a bus stop, metres away from a Manchester Bee Network bus carrying workers and schoolchildren.

Residents in Salford told the Manchester Evening News they ran from their homes after hearing the sound of scraping metal at around 8am. As they reached the street, they were greeted with a scene of carnage, which left many fearing the worst.

They watched as a black Mercedes was clawed away from the bus stop. The vehicle had also become lodged on top of a row of bins.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 8.14am. Police officers taped off Tootal Drive, close to Salford Royal Hospital, which meets Eccles Old Road in Salford.

The Mercedes is believed to have crashed into the stop and the bus as it headed towards Brookhouse. Two people were taken to hospital in ambulances.

The car had been wrecked in the collision, with it's front bumper hanging off, windows smashed, and airbags crowding the inside. The bus, too, had suffered serious damage with a side panel completely scraped, and windows smashed in.

People in the area told the Manchester Evening News how the bus had been full of people heading to school and work. The M.E.N. understands that all of the passengers had to get off the bus, as the bus was forced to stay in place while investigations were carried out.

One man commented : "I think there's probably a lot of kids that went to school round the corner in shock. There was a lot of glass that fell inside the bus.

"It's a miracle no one was seriously injured."

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident to support police and paramedics. A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Two patients [were] taken to hospital following an RTC.

"We received a 999 call at 8.14am."

Police confirmed that two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries following the crash. And a recovery truck was sent to extract the car from its precarious position.

One elderly woman passing the scene added: "Had there been anyone at that bus stop, they might have been killed, it's just terrifying."
