On Monday night, National Highways said a major recovery operation was underway with a 'complex repair' taking place on the road barriers.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "We’re currently at the scene of a road closure on the A56 in both directions from the McDonald roundabout to the junction with Grane Rd.

"The road is closed due to a road traffic collision and we anticipate this will be closed for some time. We’ll provide an update once cleared and thank you in advance for your patience."
