The air ambulance landed on nearby Marple Park. Speaking yesterday Marple councillor Steve Gribbon, who was in the town centre when the crash took place, said: "Approximately eight to 10 police vehicles are in attendance along with ambulances and firefighters.

"The air ambulance was also circling overhead looking for a place to land. Stockport Road in the town centre is closed off to traffic and pedestrians."

An investigation is ongoing. Police have appealed for witnesses, especially those who have CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage in the moments leading up to the incident, to come forward.
