Did Donald Trump win the US election 2024?

by · Manchester Evening News

Polling stations have now closed and votes are being counted in the US presidential election.

Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump are both hoping to become the next president after a chaotic campaign race.

So far dozens of states have been projected, however neither candidate has won enough votes to get the keys to the White House.

To declare victory the winner will need to secure at least 270 electoral college votes to become the next president. While Trump has not yet been declared winner, his supporters will be feeling confident after winning the battleground states of North Carolina and Georgia.

Republicans also seized control of the US Senate after flipping Democratic-held seats, wresting away the majority for the first time in four years.

Polls were closed in the other battlegrounds, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin and Nevada, but the results there were too early to call.

Concerns about the future of American democracy have emerged largely as a result of Mr Trump attempts to overturn his loss in 2020, and the actions of his angry supporters in January 2021, who stormed Washington DC’s Capitol building.

Mr Trump said on Tuesday that he had no plans to tell his supporters to refrain from violence if Ms Harris wins because they “are not violent people”.
