How the Curzon Cinema will eventually look, if plans are approved

Art Deco-style cinema set to be transformed

by · Manchester Evening News

Plans to convert an Art Deco-style cinema from the 1930s into a mixed-use community space look set for approval. Planning officers in Trafford have recommended the application from the Christian Revival Church (CRC) for the former Curzon Cinema in Urmston be approved.

The borough’s planning committee meets on Thursday next week (October 17) to discuss the proposal. CRC London wants to create a mixed-use auditorium and events space for community, educational purposes and a place of worship along with offices and a coffee shop.

If approved, there would be various external alterations to the building, which has been identified as ‘a non-designated heritage asset’ because of its historic and architectural significance. Objections have been received over issues relating to parking, the design of the conversion and the impact on the green areas and wildlife at the rear of the site on Princess Road.

A report to be tabled at the committee meeting says: "It is concluded that the proposed refurbishment, alteration and redevelopment of the Curzon would result in a benefit to the significance of the heritage asset and wider character and appearance of the area. The proposal is considered to be acceptable in terms of residential amenity, parking and highway safety, impact on trees and ecology and other relevant matters."

The proposed ground floor layout would comprise a lobby and coffee shop with front entrance doors with conference rooms, a main stage and an auditorium area. On the two floors above the main lobby area there would be office space and informal seating areas. bl

Some 20 parking spaces, three motorcycle spaces, and three accessible parking spaces are also proposed. External alterations would include replacement doors and windows, raised roof lights in the front parapet roof area, the replacement of the roof and the rebuilding of areas of brickwork and parapet on the front elevation, and alterations to the forecourt and the area of public realm.
