A day of horror on the streets of a Greater Manchester borough

There has been 24 hours of horror on the streets of Bury. A bouncer was shot in the doorway of a busy bar, a man was stabbed in a violent attack and a motorbike rider has suffered potentially life-changing injuries in a major crash.

Three separate investigations have been launched into separate incidents across the north Manchester borough on Wednesday and Thursday (October 23 and 24).

The first incident struck after a bouncer was shot at a bar in Bury town centre. Bullet holes were left in the window of Stanley's bar, on Silver Street, after the doorman was blasted in the hand on Wednesday evening.

An attempted murder investigation was launched, with a 19-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident. He remains in custody to be questioned.

The street, in the centre of Bury, remained taped off with forensics scouring the scene for evidence throughout Thursday. Greater Manchester Police said they believe the 'senseless' attack was 'isolated'.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector, Andy Day, from GMP's Bury division, said: "This was a shocking attack, and an example of the type of violence that has no place in our community. A man has been seriously injured as a result of a senseless shooting and the lives of others were put in harm's way. It is vital that those responsible are brought to justice."

It was later in the day on Thursday that emergency services were alerted to reports of a stabbing in Radcliffe, Bury. Police and paramedics raced to the scene of the 'serious assault' on Duke Street and St John's Court at around 4pm.

The victim, a 20-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries from the scene. A manhunt is underway to trace the attacker.

A number of major police scenes were put in place as forensics in white suits could be seen examining the road for evidence with torches. CSI teams and plain-clothed detectives carried out enquiries late into Thursday night.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: At around 4pm today (24 October 2024), we responded to reports of a serious assault in the St John's Court area of Radcliffe.

"Shortly after, a man aged 20 was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Officers are currently on the scene and enquiries are ongoing."

At the same time, just over a mile away, there were scenes of devastation after a major crash between a car and a motorbike on Ainsworth Road.

The bike rider, a 21-year-old man, was rushed to hospital with 'potentially life-changing injuries' in the crash, that was reported at around 4pm.

A huge emergency response, including multiple ambulances, an air ambulance, incident response units and police vehicles, raced to the scene and cordoned off the area. Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit remained in attendance throughout the evening amid investigations.

Dramatic pictures from the scene showed a Toyota Yaris with an entirely crushed bonnet, with a motorbike left 'unrecognisable' beside it on the ground beside the Victoria Hotel. The driver of the car, a 72-year-old woman, was treated at the scene by paramedics.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 4.25pm this afternoon (Thursday 24 October 2024), we were called to reports of a road traffic collision between a vehicle and a motorbike on Ainsworth Road in Radcliffe, Bury.

"A man in his early 20s has been taken to hospital with potentially life-changing injuries. Investigations are ongoing."
