'Rogue' north Manchester corner shop linked to drug dealing, illegal firework sales and CS gas is closed down
by Damon Wilkinson · Manchester Evening NewsA 'rogue' corner shop in north Manchester has been closed down over the sale of illegal fireworks and tobacco.
Action was taken against Ash News and Booze on Culceth Lane in Newton Heath after it became a 'hotspot' for anti-social behaviour, council chiefs said. A long-running investigation uncovered allegations drug-dealing was taking place outside the shop, littering and anti-social use of e-bikes.
When Trading Standards officers raided the premises on November 7, they found fireworks for sale, despite the shop not being licensed, illicit tobacco and a a canister of CS gas.
The tobacco and fireworks were seized by officers. Manchester council say police have also made several arrests relating to drugs offences connected to the store.
On Thursday at Manchester magistrates' court, the council's application for a closure order was granted. In mitigation the owner of the premises said they were unaware of the alleged drug dealing or other criminal offences taking place, nor did they know a licence was required to sell fireworks.
The shop will have to remain closed for three-months. Manchester council deputy leader Garry Bridges said: "We know how unpleasant it can be to experience anti-social behaviour.
"No one should be left in fear through the actions of a small minority which is why the council, alongside our partners are committed to taking strong action against its perpetrators. A lot of resources have been invested into preventing firework-related ASB, ensuring that their sale is regulated and that they are not sold irresponsibly.
"With Miles Platting and Newton Heath one of the areas most affected by anti-social behaviour and the proliferation of fireworks, we believe this closure sends a clear message to any other premises which engage in this irresponsible manner."
