A woman who ordered a hit job on her husband and had his body thrown into a lake full of piranha fish had been busted for cheating, investigators have revealed.

The suspect, named as Suellen Lopes, had been with her husband Ricardo Ferreira da Silva for 20 years and lived in Sorocaba, in the state of Sao Paulo. Police in Brazil had previously said that she had filed five complaints against him for domestic violence before ordering his killing in December 2022.

Now they have revealed that shortly before his death, he had caught her cheating and she wanted to be with her new lover. She allegedly paid BRL 2,900 (£400) to thugs to lure her ex to a remote farmhouse with the offer of a new job, according to the authorities.

But once there, he was beaten mercilessly before he was thrown into the tank of flesh-eating fish which can strip a body in under a minute, local media reported on October 22. Police say the 43-year-old victim was tortured and beaten for two days before he was fed to the hungry piranhas.

Now police have said that Lopes, who had two children with the victim, said that the crime occurred after he found out that she had been cheating on him. The victim's sister Rosimeire Ferreira also told local media that her family liked their relationship, saying: "He was always in love and she was much less so. He would do anything for her and for their children."

Before the body was found, the man had mysteriously disappeared. Six days after he mysteriously vanished, Lopes went to the police station to file a police report and gave a statement to the police. At the same time, she apparently discovered that her husband's body was in a lake.

During the investigation, the woman denied any involvement in the crime, but confessed that she had intended to 'scare' her husband. She said that she was receiving threats after discovering that she was cheating on him and, for this reason, she called her neighbour, named only as 'Tonhao'.

Lopes claimed that she did not think that Ricardo could be killed by the young man, according to local media. Investigators said that her husband worked as a bricklayer and had been called out to do some work on a house, but when he arrived at the remote farm, it turned out to be an ambush. Ricardo was tortured to death and then taken to the lake full of piranhas.

The victim's family said that after Ricardo discovered that she had been cheating, Lopes started calling one of his sisters, claiming that she was being threatened by her husband. But Rosimeire said that their arguments had only ever been verbal. The investigation is ongoing.
