Bedford explosion: All we know as one killed in horror house blast

Bedfordshire Police were called at around 7.30am to Cleat Hill, Bedford, after the incident, where they found one victim who had died and another who needed urgent medical attention

A massive explosion in Bedford left one person dead yesterday with another sustaining serious injuries.

At around 7.30am Saturday morning, officers from Bedfordshire Police arrived at an address in Cleat Hill, where they found the two individuals, with the surviving victim taken to a nearby hospital.

Reports say that the initial blast sparked a fire, which consumed the residential property. Images from the scene show smoke billowing into the sky from a huge tower of flames as fire crews gather along the leafy street. Neighbours were also evacuated with police advising locals to keep their doors and windows closed.

An eyewitness told the Bedford Independent. they felt a shockwave before a loud bang rang out along the street. An investigation has been launched into the circumstances around the explosion.

Detective Chief Superintendent Zara Brown said: “Our thoughts are first and foremost with the family and friends of the person who sadly died and the person who is being treated in hospital.

"We understand that this incident is very concerning for those who live in the vicinity. We are still advising people to avoid the Cleat Hill area whilst work at the scene continues."

Befordshire Police added in a Twitter post: "One person is confirmed to have died in an explosion and subsequent fire in Cleat Hill, Bedford this morning (Saturday). A second person was taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

"We have has set up an Emergency Assistance Centre for people who have been evacuated. Enquiries are ongoing to identify the cause of the explosion and residents still in their homes should keep their windows open.

"We understand this incident is very concerning for those who live in the vicinity and are still advising for people to avoid the Cleat Hill area whilst work at the scene continues. Anyone needing extra emotional support can call the Samaritans helpline on 116 123."

Bedford Borough Council said on X: "We have an emergency road closure between Cleat Hill and Kimbolton Road in Bedford. We ask all residents to please avoid the area.

"We have set up an Emergency Assistance Centre for people who have been evacuated. Officers are available at the Emergency Assistance Centre to give advice and arrange support for those who need it."
