Wild boars have increasingly been viewed as menaces in China with the government removing the animal from the list of protected wild life. Despite this, it does not mean they can be hunted at will.

According to the government-sanctioned China Daily newspaper, the July 2023 change was due to the "wild boar species is no longer threatened with survival, and the population in many areas is too high." It added wild boards are found in 28 of China's provinces and that they had been "causing harm" in 857 counties across the country.
