Man in 40s dies after Jaguar driver 'loses control while overtaking' in horrific crash
Devastated community members have paid tribute to a pedestrian after a car hit him as he was walking along a pavement. The crash victim sadly passed away at the scene in Bolton
by Monica Charsley, Ashlie Blakey · The MirrorA man was tragically killed after a Jaguar driver mounted on the pavement and crashed into him whilst allegedly trying to overtake another car.
The victim, who has been identified as a man in his 40s, was struck by the vehicle on Chew Moor Lane in Bolton at around 6.45pm on Monday. According to reports, the driver had "lost control while overtaking another vehicle". The pedestrian was walking along the pavement when the car mounted. Greater Manchester Police officers arrested the driver, who was a man in his 20s, at the scene.
He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was taken into custody for questioning. After the crash, a huge emergency services presence descended on the scene. A stretch of the road was cordoned off with a blue evidence tent erected behind the police tape. A badly damaged car was also within the cordon.
One person who lives nearby said: "Someone was having CPR performed [on them]. One of the concrete pillars that separates the railings has been split in half, it sounds like they [the driver] has mounted the pavement." Another said: "Got caught up in it. They were performing CPR on someone as I was turning around," reports Manchester Evening News.
Locals paid tribute to the victim and his family on social media following the horrific crash. One person wrote on Facebook: "I was turned round from this last night. Even in the dark, it looked horrendous. His poor family must be devastated. May he rest in peace. There have been a number of reports of a blue jaguar driving erratically, leading up to this."
Another person said: "This is horrific... so close to home and what is supposed to be a quiet area."A third person wrote: "Absolutely heartbreaking. Huge condolences to all his family and friends. May he rest in eternal peace." Officers at GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) now want to speak to any witnesses, or anyone with information.
A spokesperson said: "Our Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. They are also keen to speak to anyone who may have any footage, including dashcam, mobile phone or doorbell footage, from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.
