A devastated mum has shared her heartbreak after her unemployed partner threw boiling water on her two-year-old and killing him.

Little Joey was doused with hot water by Tim S., 30, the former partner of Sabrina Modest, 34, on 3rd July in Wedel, in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein and suffered severe injuries. The tot spent 41 days in hospital where doctors fought to save the boy's life after he suffered burns to 56 per cent of his body.

But the injuries the two-year-old had suffered were too severe and he passed away. Around 80 friends and family gathered for Joey's funeral. In the chapel at the cemetery in Wedel, which had been lovingly decorated with balloons and soft toys, the pastor reportedly said: "Joey fought, you [Sabrina] as a mother fought, but the injuries were too severe and his life force was too weak.

"In mid-August he was released from the torment that his little body could no longer bear." Sabrina had watched over her son day and night while he was in hospital. She told local media: "It will never be a farewell. But I was able to pay my last respects to my son that day."

She added: "I will never be able to deal with the loss. I am waiting for the day when I can leave, for God to take me home and for us to finally be together again. My laughter, all my happiness, was stolen from me. Only my empty shell is still here." Alleged child murderer Tim S. scalded Joey in Sabrina's apartment, prosecutors have said.

Sabrina was out at the time and Tim S. was later arrested. Local media said that he has shown no remorse and has remained silent on the allegations. It is currently unclear what led to the fatal incident.

Senior public prosecutor Peter Mueller-Rakow told local media: "The 30-year-old was charged with manslaughter at the end of September." According to a 2019 study led by Henning Wißmann of the Charité ‒ Universitätsmedizin Berlin's department for psychiatry and psychotherapy between 12 to 13 per cent of children in Germany suffer physical abuse.
