Sobbing mum of baby girl killed by Lucy Letby warns 'this will happen again'

Parents giving evidence at the Thirlwall Inquiry have insisted that CCTV on hospital wards and cameras in incubators would help to protect babies on hospital wards going forward

The tearful mum of a baby girl murdered by Lucy Letby has warned “this will happen again”.

It comes as nearly all the parents of the evil nurse’s victims have called for CCTV on neonatal wards so they can keep an eye on their children even when they are not physically able to be at their cotside.

Baby K is the most recent victim that Letby, 34, has been convicted of killing, after prosecutors decided to pursue a retrial when the original jury could not reach a verdict. In July Letby was found guilty of killing the infant, born at 25 weeks premature, by dislodging her breathing tube.

The little girl’s heartbroken mother wept as she slammed hospital bosses at the Countess of Chester for failing to take ownership of the issues on the neonatal unit and allowing Letby to go on a year long killing spree. She sobbed as she told the Thirlwall Inquiry yesterday (Mon): "The ripples are unbelievable.

"It scars your life, it changes you, you don't just grieve your daughter, you grieve who you were, as a husband and wife, it just completely destroys what's around you. It doesn't stop and it doesn't go away, you have to live with it for the rest of your life and for nobody to take responsibility or ownership of that is not right.

"It can't continue to be like that because this will happen again, because what’s the reason to stop them.. There is no reason, they just protect themselves.”

It followed further emotional testimony from the parents of Baby J who survived her ordeal on the unit. Although the jury could not reach a verdict on the charges about Child J, it was suspected that Letby had attempted to smother her.

Child J's parents said: "We will never know the truth. It's for this reason we believe babies should be monitored using technology such as CCTV. It should be here for each cot space and incubator."

The inquiry, chaired by Lady Justice Thirlwall in Liverpool, is examining how the twisted nurses was able to murder seven babies and attempt to kill seven others between 2015 and 2016.

Letby, of Hereford, is serving 15 whole life orders for her crimes.
