IRC concerned asylum seekers will be put back on streets

The Irish Refugee Council (IRC) has expressed concern that asylum seekers accommodated in Citywest for the cold weather initiative will be put back on to the streets tomorrow.

An email sent to those in Citywest requires them to leave the centre by 10am tomorrow morning.

It also said that they may be able to avail of private accommodation with friends and family.

The Refugee Council described the suggestion as "inappropriate and misguided", as many people will not have this option.

It has also pointed out that tomorrow's forecast is 1 degree Celcius.

Videos emerging from Citywest tonight show empty beds which are not being used.

One volunteer who is working with the men said moving them from the centre does not make any sense as the weather is likely to get worse, which will result in them returning.

A statement has been sought from the Department of Integration.

A report published by the IRC yesterday includes insights from 49 volunteers into the dangers they face supporting rotection applicants on Dublin's streets.

The IRC has said it is concerned that putting people back out on to the streets will place further pressure and demands on volunteers.

In August, the High Court found that the State is not meeting the basic needs of unaccommodated protection applicants.

The State is appealing the judgement.
