One man remains in custody tonight as gardaí in Co Mayo continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the violent death of a 58-year-old in Ballina.

John Casserly died after sustaining serious injuries following a suspected assault in the town shortly before 12am last night.

A man in his 30s, who was arrested soon afterwards, is still being questioned by detectives.

He is one of two people who were detained after emergency services were alerted to the incident on Tone Street in Ballina.

The other man, who is in his 20s, was released without charge this evening.

Gardaí are preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions following his release.

The body of Mr Casserly was removed from the apartment complex in which he lived earlier today and taken to Mayo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Garda technical experts are continuing to conduct a forensic examination of the scene

It is understood the deceased sustained a number of stab wounds following an altercation at around 11.45pm last night.

Mr Casserly was from Co Mayo and had been living in Ballina for some time.

The suspect is being held under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, meaning he can be questioned for a total of 24 hours, excluding rest periods.

Detectives investigating the circumstances surrounding the death spent much of the day conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area around the apartment complex.

This was augmented by a detailed forensic examination of the scene where Mr Casserly’s body was found.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone with camera footage, including dash cam, from the Tone Street and surrounding areas last night, to contact Ballina Garda Station at 096 20550, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
