Over 680 candidates to contest Election 24

At the close of nominations, there were 685 candidates in the running for General Election 2024.

Some 246 of the candidates contesting are women, making up 36%.

By far the largest cohort among the candidates is Independents who number 171.

The party with the most candidates is Fianna Fáil with 82 followed by Fine Gael with 80 and Sinn Féin with 71.

However, no single party is fielding enough candidates to win a majority on its own in the next Dáil.

The constituency with the most candidates is Louth at 25.

The new constituency of Wicklow-Wexford has the fewest at 10 candidates.

However, any of the listed candidate numbers could change, as candidates have until Monday to withdraw from the race.

The Ceann Comhairle, currently Seán Ó Fearghaíl, is automatically re-elected.

To include him would bring Fianna Fáil numbers up to 83.

The number represents the number of candidates and not the number of individuals running in the election, as individuals can stand as candidates in multiple constituencies.
