The father of two young children has described how a stranger attacked him with a machete outside his Cardiff home. The 29-year-old, who youngest child is only five days old, had gone to check a noise he had heard at his kitchen window in the early hours of the morning.

He had looked through his CCTV to see if he could see anything and went out to check his garage door was locked when he says he was attacked. "It was absolutely terrifying," said Curtis, who only wanted to give his first name.

"I went out to check the garage and there was someone with a big machete standing next to me. I just remember it being such a large sword. They swung the blade at me and I managed to move fast. I put my arm out and the blade caught the inside of my arm." For the latest Cardiff news, sign up to our newsletter here

Curtis, who lives in the Brynfedw area of Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, needed hospital treatment for the wound, but feels that he is lucky to be alive. "I keep looking back on it and asking myself what would have happened if I hadn't moved as fast as I did. It is too scary to go there. The police have been really helpful and are now investigating but it is really scary as we are a new family of four.

"I just want people to be aware and to be careful. After hearing what happened, several people have got in touch to say they have heard knocking late at night in the area. I would urge people not to answer."
