An investigation is under way after primary school pupils as young as six were reportedly shown x-rated images during a church harvest festival service. Schoolchildren from Hornsea Community Primary School in East Yorkshire were enjoying a singalong at the nearby United Reformed Church when the lyrics to a harvest song were suddenly replaced by indecent images.

According to The Sun school staff have written to parents to apologise while the church is reported to be carrying out its own inquiries as to how the incident happened. One parent told the newspaper the children were singing when the lyrics were swapped for "utter filth".

They said it had left the six and seven-year-olds not knowing where to look. The school has sent a letter to the families explaining what happened.

It said the church computer screen was sharing the words to the songs fro a laptop which was being operated by volunteers. It said "for a few seconds" some "inappropriate content" was shown.

It added that school staff had immediately intervened and removed it from the screen. It said it was not sure if children had been aware of what happened and they had not spoken to them about it however the safeguarding lead was following it up with the church.

Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education at East Riding of Yorkshire Council confirmed they had been made aware of the incident in the church. She said: "The school informed families the same day and will not be using the church until we can be reassured that this cannot happen again. The church are conducting their own enquiries into the incident."

An elder at the church is reported to have told The Sun: “There’s nothing to defend here. We will just let the process take its course. It’s in the hands of the professionals.”
