Major A470 roadworks postponed after fatal train crash

by · Wales Online

Major roadworks planned for the A470 have been postponed following the fatal train crash involving two trains in Powys earlier this week. Tudor Evans, a passenger, died in the incident which saw two trains crash near Llanbrynmair, Powys, on Monday night.

It also resulted in 15 people being taken to hospital following the collision and an investigation into what caused the crash is underway.

An area of the A470 at Talerddig has been closed since the crash and roadworks that were supposed to start there on October 31 have now been postponed until the New Year, the Welsh Government has announced.

Before the crash the Welsh Government had said that there would be roadworks on the A470 between Talerddig and Dolfach from October until at least February. The plan was to provide a permanent solution on this stretch of road which has had traffic management in place since an emergency closure in October 2023, when a retaining wall which supported the road partially collapsed.

A statement from the Welsh Government said that the situation had been reviewed following the rail incident. No new date for when the roadworks will begin has been released.

The Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said: “My thoughts are with all affected by the rail incident, and my sympathies are with the family of the man who lost his life

“Pausing the work at Talerddig until the New Year is the right thing to do at this point to allow time for the community to come to terms with the sad events which have taken place. While every effort is made to minimise disruption, beginning the work next week would have brought uncertainty at a difficult time. We will provide further updates on a revised timetable for the roadworks.”

Traffic lights will remain on the road for the rest of this year, with one lane closed. There will be regular monitoring of the road during this time. The road has been closed between the Llangurig turn off and Tan Y Castell at Carno since the crash and remains closed on Friday morning.
