Think you can detect a liar? Test your facial reading abilities to see if you can work out when someone is being truthful in this new quiz. It comes after a study revealed that one in five working adults 'regularly' tell lies to their boss.

The most common lies were used to explain tardiness, misrepresent workload levels and, of course, feign illness. However, according to the research, the most frequent fib revolved around how employees were feeling.

The research also revealed that those who lie to their employer do so on average once a week, including about their location and reasons for missing deadlines.

The majority of workers believe they can pull the wool over their boss's eyes because either have good rapport with their manager or because their lies are convincing enough.

Unfortunately this hasn't been the case for 16 per cent who have been caught out lying and as a result have received a verbal or written warning.

A spokesperson for 888poker, who devised the quiz, commented: "You can interpret people as much by the way they speak, as the words they use. This fun quiz will discover how observant you are of others."

"The workplace in particular is an interesting place to explore telling white lies, because the hierarchy means you could get in trouble, but also colleagues perhaps don't know you as well as friends and family do."

Many employees believe their fellow colleagues lie to their boss more frequently than they do, and over two thirds also suspect their employer has told them porkies.

The primary reasons for resorting to a fib include avoiding trouble (30 per cent), making life at work easier (28 per cent) and assisting a colleague (24 per cent).

Almost a fifth have managed to escape the consequences of a mistake at work by denying it, but a third reckon their facial expression would betray them. And 20 per cent would attribute their body language as a giveaway sign.
