Remembrance parade cancelled due to health and safety concerns to go ahead this year

by · Wales Online

Organisers of a popular Remembrance Day parade have announced that it will be going ahead this year after its cancellation in 2023. Barry Town Council have said that they are confident this year's parade will take place in the town.

The Remembrance Day parade was cancelled in Barry last year due to health and safety concerns, causing upset within the community. At the time the town council discussed the event with the Royal British Legion (RBL) and concluded that due to "health and safety challenges which cannot be overcome at this late stage" the parade could not take place. However, this year the two organisations as well as people in the community are working together to make sure the event can take place this November. This year, Barry Town Council has taken over overall responsibility of the remembrance event management, group participation, insuring, stewarding and road closures for the parade through the town.

A spokesperson for Barry Town Council said: "Barry Town Council, Royal British Legion and the local community are working together to make sure this year’s Remembrance Parade for Barry goes ahead smoothly. We are fully committed to supporting the Armed Forces community.

"Whilst we acknowledge there have been previous issues, we are confident all parties can move forward in their shared ambition to give Barry a parade that serves the town proudly. We hope that the local community will attend and support this poignant moment. Remembrance is a time for reflection to honour the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces."

Along with many Remembrance Day commemorations around Wales, the Barry parade will take place on November 10. Registration is open for the Barry parade.
