Caldey Island monk, 76, arrested on suspicion of harassment and sex assault

A monk, aged 76, from an island off the Welsh coast has been arrested on suspicion of harassment and sexual assault.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed they had received a complaint on September 18 concerning "harassment and non-recent sexual offences".

The arrest took place on September 20, involving a member of the Caldey Monastic Community situated on Caldey Island near Tenby in Pembrokeshire. Following his arrest, the individual has been released on conditional bail, according to the police.

The police force issued a statement: "Dyfed-Powys Police received a report, on September 18, of harassment, and non-recent sexual offences. A 76-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of harassment and sexual assault.

"He has been released on conditional bail pending further police enquiries. The victim is being supported by specialist officers."

In response to the incident, the Caldey Monastic Community expressed: "We take these matters very seriously and are cooperating fully with Dyfed-Powys police."

They emphasised their commitment to the well-being of all parties involved, stating: "Our priority remains the well-being of those involved, and we are committed to ensuring that appropriate steps are taken in line with our safeguarding responsibilities, and in caring for the most vulnerable."
