Kassanda police officer knocked dead as milk truck driver dodges pothole
by URN · The ObserverKassanda police have refused to blame the poor state of the Mityana-Mubende road for the death of their colleague Moses Aliguma.
Aliguma tragically lost his life on Monday at Nakiganda village along the Mityana-Mubende road when a Fuso Fighter milk truck (reg no. UBA 135G), attempting to avoid a pothole, collided with his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (reg no. UFP 815R).
According to Racheal Kawala, Wamala regional police spokesperson, the truck, which was travelling from Mityana toward Mubende, swerved into the officer's lane, causing the fatal crash.
"Unfortunately, he swerved off his lane while trying to dodge potholes at Nakiganda and knocked the rider of the motorcycle who was riding from the opposite direction on his lane," said Kawala.
The driver of the truck fled the scene and is yet to be identified. Police have launched an investigation and are working to apprehend the suspect. Kawala emphasized that while the poor condition of roads is a challenge, it does not justify reckless driving.
Aliguma’s body was transported to Kiganda Health Centre mortuary for a postmortem. This latest incident highlights the increasing number of road fatalities involving police officers. Last year, over 10 officers were killed in similar accidents, with hotspots including Ntinda-Stretcher Road, Jinja Road near the Uganda Management Institute (UMI), Bugolobi, Nansana, and Wakiso.
