Statue of historic figure in County Kildare town is damaged again
by Paul O'Meara · Leinster LeaderMore damage has been done to a statue of John Devoy in Naas town centre.
This emerged after local councillor Anne Breen complained about the delay in remedying damage sustained to the statue earlier this year.
According to Kildare County Council, more vandalism has taken place and a suspect has been spoked to by gardaí
KCC is meanwhile reluctant to carry out repair work - which will necessitate the removal of the structure - until there is some kind assurance that more damage will not occur.
At a previous Naas Municipal District meeting, KCC official Eoghan Ryan said the gardaí had been contacted and they undertook to address the matter with the person allegedly responsible, described as someone “with issues.”
Mr Ryan confirmed that the bill for repairing the structure will come to €10,000.
He described the incident as a delicate matter that needs to be treated with sensitivity.
The five feet six inches tall depiction of Devoy, a native of Greenhills, near Johnstown, was put up about eight years ago.
