Tributes have been paid to a former Mayor of Kildare who passed away suddenly aged in his early 50s on Thursday, September 26 last.

The late Micheál 'Spike' Nolan, who previously served as a county councillor for Fine Gael, passed away last week in Newbridge.

He was the son of the late Micheál 'Spike' Nolan Senior, who also had a career in local politics and passed away in 2014.

Kildare South Senator Fiona O'Loughlin paid tribute to Mr Nolan's passing on Friday, September 27 last, and now, even more people have come out to pay their respects on RIP.ie.

Minister of State Martin Heydon said: "Micheál Spike Nolan, served as a member of Kildare County Council from 2007 to 2014 representing Newbridge, and served as Mayor of Kildare for two years. A proud Sarsfields man, he followed in his father’s footsteps working for all of the people of Newbridge.

"More than that, he was someone I worked closely with, and whose opinion I really valued.

"He took a leading role in a number of my election campaigns in Newbridge and was always available at the end of the phone for updates and advice."

"Our thoughts are with Deirdre, Rebecca, Tadhg, Jack, Ursula, Kevin, Brian and Cissy. He will be greatly missed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

Brian Mulvey, the Chairperson of the Board of Management for Patrician Primary School, said about the late Mr Nolan: "On behalf of the entire Patrician Primary School Community, we would like to express our deepest condolences to our dear colleague Deirdre, to Rebecca, Tadhg & Jack and to the wider Nolan and O'Leary families on the sudden passing of Micheál.

"We are devastated for your loss.

"As part of a lifetime of public service, we were honoured to have Micheál serve as Treasurer on our Board of Management for the last ten years or more.

"He constantly gave back to the community, following the proud traditions of the Nolan family.

"We will miss him greatly, both as a friend and esteemed colleague."

"RIP a chara," Mr Mulvey concluded.
