Amazon Fire Stick owners warned as users could be 'surprised with £180 bill'

by · Birmingham Live

Amazon Fire Stick owners have been issued a warned over extra charges they could face. A user took to Reddit to explain how he was slapped with an extra £180 bill.

They explained that they started seeing mysterious charges to their Amazon account after having their wife's sister and her husband move into their basement flat. They told guests they shouldn't watch anything that required a subscription.

A post read: "Last month I found an unexpected charge for Kids+, which Amazon agreed to reverse, but then it showed up again and I realised they had subscribed. They swear they didn't, so I chalked it up to Amazon error.

POLL: Do you agree with the DWP taking money from bank accounts or wages?

"But in the past four days I found two more subscriptions added to my account, and this time checking their viewing history I know for sure they did indeed watch shows that required Starz and Acorn TV subscriptions."

Subscriptions for Kids+, Starzplay and Acorn TV each cost £4.99/$4.99 per month - and add up to about £15/$15 per month. These unexpected subscriptions could cost you up to £180/$180 over the course of a year.

The person said; "I wouldn't have realised except when they subbed to Acorn last night. It sent me an email about my free trial starting up. I went down this morning and locked them [with a PIN] again."

Brumwish 2024 - buy a gift for a child in need

BrumWish 2024 is Birmingham Live's festive drive to get thousands of gifts to children and young people across our city - among them the homeless, the vulnerable, kids in care, kids who are poorly or struggling, and kids who have little.

There are THREE simple ways to help.

  1. Buy a new gift from the Brumwish 2024 Amazon giftlist. In just a click your donation will be whizzing its way to our volunteers at Edgbaston Stadium.
  2. Donate money to the appeal fund hosted by Thrive Together Birmingham - this will help pay for gifts for kids with specialist needs or specific wishes.
  3. Buy a gift and, even better, rope in friends, neighbours and workmates to do the same, then drop off your pressies at Edgbaston Stadium, Edgbaston Road, B5 7QU on Friday 6th December, 10am - 3pm; Saturday 7th December, 10am - 1pm; or Monday 9th December, 10am - 1pm. Volunteers will be there to help you. Please don't wrap your gifts. You can also drop off by arrangement until Monday 16th December - contact Louise on 07469 979286.

Thanks to our partnership with #Toys4Birmingham, every single gift will find a good home in the loving care of a child living in B&Bs or hotels, hostels or refuges, children receiving support from specialist organisations and charities, and families being supported by children's centres and charities around the city.

Making up the Brumwish and Toys4Birmingham gang are Thrive Together Birmingham, Birmingham Playcare Network, Warwickshire Cricket Foundation (the charitable arm of Warwickshire County Cricket Club), Birmingham Forward Steps and BirminghamLive/Birmingham Mail.

Thank you to Amazon UK and the amazing team at the Sutton Coldfield depot for their support.

Another user said that they too have had to cancel subscriptions they were accidentally signed up for. They wrote: "I’ve had to unsubscribe from so many Amazon channels that were automatically subscribed to when my dad clicked on something from one of those channels.

"They auto renew each moth and [I] didn’t realise they were billing me for multiple channels for almost a year."
