Audi driver blamed 'glazed eyes' on second-hand cannabis smoke

Police officers noted Jevon Singh's 'pinpoint pupils' when they pulled over his rented Audi Quattro

An Audi driver who was caught behind the wheel with 'glazed eyes' and 'pinpoint pupils' claimed he hadn't been smoking cannabis. Instead, Jevon Singh claimed his reaction was due to the smell from others smoking the drug in his car.

Singh, 19, had been driving with friends at Meridian Leisure Park in Leicester when he was caught. Leicester Magistrates' Court heard on Wednesday, October 10, a smell of cannabis had been "emanating" from the Audi Quattro.

Prosecutor Sally Bedford told the court: "The officers reported the defendant's eyes were glazed with pinpoint pupils." However Roshni Modi, representing Singh, said others in the car had been smoking cannabis, not her client, LeicestershireLive reports.

Ms Modi told the court Singh had not smoked any cannabis that day, but had smoked some the day before. "Since the incident he has stopped smoking cannabis altogether," she added.

Singh, of Christopher Drive, Thurmaston, pleaded guilty to driving while over the cannabis limit, and also admitted having no insurance. Ms Modi said Singh had believed the company he'd rented the Audi from had arranged the insurance, adding: "He is very sorry for his actions and ashamed to be before the court."

District Judge Amar Mehta told Singh: "You were driving a motor vehicle with a level of drugs that was over the limit. You showed obvious signs of impairment. You were driving when it was unsafe to do so and you could have injured some people."

In addition to a 12-month community order, Singh was banned from driving for 16 months and must carry out 100 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay a £114 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
