Liam Payne had more than 20 injuries when he died but none were defensive. Argentinian authorities have spoken out to describe the 31-year-old's injuries after the Wolverhampton dad-of-one died following a fall from a balcony in Buenos Aires while staying at the Casasur hotel.

In an official statement given to The Associated Press, police authorities stated that the 31-year-old former One Direction and ITV X Factor star "jumped from the balcony of his room." They added "the 25 injuries described in the autopsy are compatible with those caused by a fall from a height."

They added that Liam had no "defensive type" injuries and that the wounds on his body were "vital and produced at the same time as each other" concluding that "the intervention of third parties would be ruled out," according to Argentinian outlet La Nacion.

Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, told Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel that Payne had fallen into an internal courtyard at the hotel. “A few minutes later [an] emergency team arrived and confirmed the death of this man who we later learned was from a musical group. He had injuries incompatible with life as a result of his fall. There was no way to do anything,” Crescenti said.

Crescenti said authorities were investigating the circumstances of Payne’s death and conducting an autopsy. It comes as locals in Wolverhampton paid tribute to the Guardian newspaper. “Everyone is really saddened by the news, but particularly in Wolverhampton because we felt like he was our superstar,” said Joel Clarke, 26, on a lunch break from his job at the city council.

“I think his death has touched a lot of people quite deeply. I just hope it leads to more mental health support for people, talking about the importance of support networks and just being a lot more forgiving to people. It’s just devastating.”
