'Oustanding' Ofsted rating for school in area where '7 in 10 kids' live in hardship

A Birmingham primary school in one of the city's most deprived areas has been awarded the top grade of 'outstanding' by Ofsted inspectors. Wyndcliffe Primary School, on Little Green Lane in Bordesley Green, was described as a 'welcoming' school where the are 'no limits or barriers to what pupils can achieve.'

Following an inspection in July of this year, the school's rating was upgraded from 'good' to 'outstanding'. Ofsted awarded the top grade in every aspect of the school's performance including quality of education, personal development and leadership.

Wyndcliffe Primary sits in an area of the city where seven in ten kids live in families facing financial hardship. But the school has been praised for creating a 'harmonious' spirit where difference is 'celebrated' and pupils play 'happily and harmoniously together.'

Ofsted inspectors rank a schools based on their overall effectiveness giving them a rating of either: outstanding; good; requires improvement; or inadequate. Many parents and carers rely on Ofsted ratings to help them choose a school or nursery for their child.

Wyndcliffe Primary School was inspected on July 9-10. The Ofsted inspection report reads: "Pupils from all backgrounds and cultures thrive at Wyndcliffe. They receive an excellent start to their education. The school believes there are no limits or barriers to what pupils can achieve.

"Staff have high expectations. Pupils live up to these. Staff show genuine care and compassion towards pupils. Relationships between staff, pupils and parents are very strong. The school prepares pupils to be curious and enthusiastic learners. They develop a passion for learning. Pupils learn this from the moment they start school.

"The school has designed a curriculum which is ambitious. Pupils develop a deep breadth of knowledge as they move through the school."

The report continues: "The school’s programme for personal development is exceptional. Pupils make a tangible difference to the lives of others. For example, pupils link with a school in Ghana and read stories to each other remotely. Pupils have empathy for others and raise money for a range of local and national charities.

"They care for their own and others’ mental and physical well-being. Pupils have many meaningful opportunities to develop a sense of responsibility. For example, pupils apply and are interviewed to become subject ambassadors."
