Family pay tribute to 19-year-old whose life was 'cut too short' in Washwood Heath shooting

The family of a 19-year-old who died after a shooting in Washwood Heath have said his life was cut "far too short". Riyan Ali was found with life-threatening injuries in Alderson Road shortly before 10.30pm on Saturday, October 19.

The teenager was rushed to hospital in a critical condition and lost his fight for life two days later on October 21. Two men, aged 46 and 22, and a woman, 40, were arrested in Alum Rock Road on suspicion of murder.

The suspects have since been released on bail while police enquiries continue. A third man, 25, who was arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday, has been released without charge.

Mr Ali's family paid an emotional tribute to the tragic teenager this afternoon. They said his dreams were "boundless" and that he brought "warmth" to their lives.

In a joint statement, his family said: "In loving memory of Riyan Ali, a young man, whose light shone brightly in the lives of everyone who knew him. At just 19, he was a source of joy, laughter, and inspiration for his family and friends.

"His kindness, curiosity, and unwavering spirit, touched hearts and created cherished memories that will forever resonate. He had a unique ability to uplift those around him, always ready with a smile or a listening ear.

“Whether pursuing his passions or sharing moments with loved ones, he embraced life with enthusiasm and grace. His dreams were as boundless as his potential and he approached each day with a sense of adventure.

“Though his time with us was far too short, his legacy of love, compassion and courage will endure in the hearts of his family. We will remember him not only for his achievements, but for the warmth he brought into our lives.

“As we navigate this profound loss, we hold on to the beautiful memories and the unbreakable bond that will always remain. In honouring his spirit, let us celebrate the love he gave and the impact he made. He will forever be missed but never forgotten, living on in the stories, laughter and love shared by those he cherished most.”

Detective Inspector James Mahon of West Midlands Police said: “Our thoughts remain with Riyan's family at this incredibly difficult time. We are doing everything we can to establish what happened and why to get answers for his family.

“We understand the alarm incidents like this can cause and our officers will be providing reassurance to the community, so please talk to them if you have any concerns.”
