A 'manipulative and violent' man who seriously assaulted his partner after months of coercive and controlling behaviour has been jailed. Ingus Silins's victim was treated for a collapsed lung and fractured ribs in hospital following a horrific attack in Birmingham.

The 24-year-old was arrested from his home in Handsworth after officers were called to the address by a concerned neighbour when his partner asked for help. Officers and paramedics arrived at the address and she was taken to hospital with severe injuries.

Silins was charged and after appearing before Birmingham Magistrates court was given strict bail conditions not to contact the victim. But he continued to harass her, sending messages on social media telling her to contact the police and tell them that she had lied.

Police said he would tell her she was not a victim of domestic abuse because he didn’t abuse her every day. Silins pleaded guilty to wounding, coercive and controlling behaviour and witness intimidation. He was jailed for four years for his offences at Birmingham Crown Court last Friday, September 20. He was also handed an eight-year restraining order.

Speaking after the case, Police Staff investigator, Kathryn Burns, said: “Silins was a manipulative and violent individual who left this woman scared and traumatised. Thanks to her courage, Silins been punished for his actions and has failed in his attempt at controlling her.

"I hope this encourages others in similar situations to come forward and speak out so that we can help them and bring more offenders like Silins to justice.” If you or a loved one needs help to leave an abusive relationship, support is available. Visit No Excuse for Abuse.
