People urged to check their 50p coins for special phrase that could make them 20 times more valuable

Coin collectors, take note of this special 50p piece. It's not just for numismatists though - anyone could find this unusual coin in their change, and it could be worth up to 20 times its face value if it bears a certain phrase.

You might have this seemingly ordinary 50p in your wallet or purse right now, so make sure you don't spend it next time you're out shopping. The coin was minted in 2020 to commemorate the UK's departure from the EU, and some have recently sold for between £10 and £11.

As reported by The Sun, over 10 million Brexit coins were produced by the Royal Mint, each bearing the date of the UK's official EU exit and the phrase "peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations" - a reference to Thomas Jefferson's inaugural address. Only 47,000 were released with a special presentation box for serious collectors, and these are priced at £45.

The coins were struck in. 925 sterling silver to a proof standard, giving them a higher quality finish and greater definition than regular change.

The 50p coins also bear a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth by Jody Clark on the obverse side. If you stumble upon one in your home, you could potentially sell it for a tidy profit or add it to your personal collection of rare coins, reports the Mirror.

The Royal Mint regularly issues commemorative coins to celebrate significant British events. For example, they curated a special collection to mark King Charles' coronation, which included uncirculated £5 coins, silver proof coins weighing a kilogram, gold proof sovereign milestones, and silver bullion bars available for purchase.

Additionally, five million 50p coins were circulated to commemorate King Charles' ascension to the throne. Although the Brexit 50p coin may currently be worth twenty times its face value just four years after its release, if you possess one and are considering selling it for some extra cash, you might want to consider listing it on eBay for collectors.

However, if you can afford to wait or don't immediately need the extra money, it might be worth holding onto it for a bit longer. This is because the value of rare coins often appreciates over time, so selling in the future could potentially earn you even more money.
