The first draw in a new Derby Community Lottery takes place this Saturday (October 5) and people can buy a ticket to support their favourite good cause in the city. In total, there are 40 good causes to choose from and they will receive 50p from each £1 ticket that is purchased, while the lucky winning ticket is in line for a £25,000 jackpot.

The Derby Community Lottery has been launched by Community Action Derby and good causes signed up include a wide range of local charities, sports clubs, PTAs, and other not-for-profit organisations.

Jonathan Dwerryhouse, Community Action strategy and partnerships manager, said: "Voluntary and community organisations are Derby’s life and soul, and they have a profound impact on people’s lives, health, culture, heritage and the environment.

"The money raised by Derby Community Lottery is going to make a lot of difference to grassroots good causes. We'd encourage all charities and community groups to register as a good cause and start fundraising with our lottery. It’s easy and free."

The lottery is being run by Gatherwell, an external lottery management company that run more than 140 local lotteries across the country, raising over £3.7 million a year for community groups nationally.

Mr Dwerryhouse said: "Good causes in Derby are encouraged to join and benefit. There is no limit on the number of organisations that can participate, so any not-for-profit group looking to secure additional funding is welcome to get involved. Each participating cause will have its own dedicated webpage, where supporters can purchase tickets.

"For every £1 ticket sold, the chosen cause will receive 50p, with an additional 10p going into a central fund that will be distributed to other causes in the community."

Paul Brookhouse, manager of Derby Food4Thought Alliance, said: "We are excited to have signed up as a good cause to Derby Community Lottery. It’s great that whenever someone buys a ticket, they can choose to donate 50% of their ticket to us at DF4TA, helping us tackle food insecurity for families and those most in need."

Anyone matching six numbers in the draw will win £25,000 or a share if there is more than one winner. Five matches is £2,000, four is £250, three is £25 and two gives the ticket holder three extra tickets. A weekly draw takes place every Saturday night.
