A Derby school, which specialises in in teaching secondary-aged pupils at risk of permanent exclusion, has been praised by Ofsted inspectors who decided that it should retain its "outstanding" rating, which it has had for 10 years. Derby Pride Academy is described as the pupils’ "safe place" in the latest report and praised for its nurturing environment, which helps pupils’ behaviour and attendance improve rapidly.

Part of the Esteem Multi-Academy Trust (MAT), Derby Pride Academy in Orient Way, has an "exceptional strength" in building pupils’ character and resilience and that pupils’ behaviour is transformed because of the effective measures the school takes, according to the inspectors' newly-published report.

Head teacher Mark Hatton, who joined the school in April, said: "As an academy, we are delighted that Ofsted has recognised that we have taken effective action to maintain the outstanding standards identified at the previous inspection.

"The staff at the academy have worked tirelessly to transform our curriculum and evolve our provision to respond to the changing needs of the city we serve.

“I am so incredibly proud of what we have achieved in the short space of time since starting as head teacher in April, and it is fantastic for our staff and students to receive the recognition that their hard work and determination deserves. It is also important for the city of Derby to know that for pupils who may struggle in mainstream education, we can offer a further chance for them to be successful."

Measures to help behaviour include awarding include DPA Points, which are given to pupils who demonstrate the school’s values of determination, pride and ambition in improving their behaviour.

The report also highlighted how the school had a sharp focus on assessing reading ability, numeracy skills and literacy when pupils join the academy and that staff also succeed in delivering a rich experience to broaden their horizons.

Mr Hatton added: “This report recognises our unwavering commitment to high expectations, positive relationships and an inclusive learning environment. It will also allow us to continue to develop the strong foundations we have laid around our academy values."

Ofsted spoke to commissioning schools, parents and carers as part of the inspection, who said they value and acknowledge the positive transformation they see in their children after they start attending Derby Pride Academy.

Clive Lawrence, chief education officer at Esteem MAT, said: “As a trust we are delighted that, under new leadership, Derby Pride Academy has maintained its exceptionally high standards since it was last graded 'outstanding' by Ofsted. Leaders, staff, pupils, and their parents/carers should be immensely proud of their hard work and tireless efforts.

"Alternative provision plays a huge part in the wider education sector, particularly in supporting the needs of some of the most vulnerable children and young people within our communities. We are very proud of student's achievements."
