List of road closures announced as Ilkeston Charter Fair returns this week

Erewash Borough Council has announced the road closures that will take effect this week ahead of the Ilkeston Charter Fair. The 772nd fair is returning to Ilkeston on Wednesday October 16.

The annual fair sees thousands flooding to Ilkeston for the prestigious fair, with the town's streets filled with stalls and rides. The fair dates back to 1252 after Henry III granted a charter that allowed the fair to held. In preparation for the fair, Erewash Borough Council spends months organising the event, as well as how the fair will affect the local area.

The Ilkeston Charter Fair runs from Wednesday (October 16) - when it kicks off at 6pm - until 11pm on Saturday (October 21). The fair is free to walk around, and the official opening will take place on Thursday (October 19) with a ceremony at 11.15am. The official opening on Thursday will see hundreds of people gathering to hear the bells rung by the mayor signalling the official opening.

In preparation for this historical event, we have compiled a comprehensive list of all the road closrues that are expected this week, as provided by Erewash Borough Council:

Between 5am on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 and 12 noon on Sunday, October 20 the following roads will be closed:

  • Bath Street - from its junction with Wilmot Street to the Market Place
  • East Street - from house number 38 to its junction with Bath Street/the Market Place
  • Market Place - in its entirety
  • St Mary Street - from the northern boundary of the Arena Hope charity shop (and The Harrow public house opposite) to its junction with the Market Place
  • Pimlico - from its junction with New Lawn Road to its junction with Burns Street
  • Burns Street - from its junction with Pimlico to the end of the Scala cinema building (and property number 20 opposite)
  • Wharncliffe Road- from its junction with Albert Street to the Market Place
  • South Street - from the Market Place to its junction with Gladstone Street West
  • Queen Street - in its entirety
  • Market Street - from its junction with the Market Place to the boundary between 2 Market Street and Rutland Mill

Please note: the car parks on South Street, Pimlico, Queen Street and Gregory Street will be closed for the duration of the Ilkeston Charter Fair.
