2 taken to hospital after A50 crash closed major road for several hours

Derbyshire police have revealed why a busy stretch of the A50 near Derby was blocked for more than two hours. Officers were called to reports of a collision on the A50 near the junction with the A514 at around 10.45am on Thursday, November 28.

National Highways confirmed the closure at 11.24am, with a statement reading: "The A50 in Derbyshire is closed eastbound between the A38 Toyota Island and the A6 in Derby due to a serious collision. More information to follow, thank you for your patience."

Traffic monitoring service, Inrix, warned of queuing traffic in the area, with traffic maps showing congestion towards the Hilton turn off. Police now say that the blockage followed a collision involving a car and a van.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We were called to reports of a collision on the A50 near to the junction with the A514 at Thursday morning. The incident involved an Audi A1 and a Ford Transit.

"Two people have been taken to hospital, but the extent of their injuries is not yet known." All lanes of the eastbound carriageway were reopened before 1pm, with traffic returning to normal shortly afterwards.
