Banksy in Derbyshire? Shop owner arrives to find entire shop graffitied inside and out
by Oscar Fisher · Derbyshire LiveA Derbyshire business owner was left shocked after waking up to find his entire shop - inside and out - had been covered in graffiti overnight. Lee Reuter, 29, who opened Glam and Glow, a beauty salon, in Swadlincote over the summer, thinks the makeover could be the work of world-famous anonymous artist Banksy.
Lee alerted his customers with a Facebook post reading: "Attention. We came to open up the shop this morning only to found out our whole shop has been graffitied. They have tagged most of the shop inside and out literally all over most of the walls."
Speaking about what happened when he arrived at the salon on Thursday, November 28, Lee said: "I arrived at around 9am this morning and had parked my car a little further away due to the Christmas lights turn on this week. I walked up to the shop to open up and thought to myself, 'Crikey what's gone on here?'.
"It was literally covered from top to bottom, inside and out, with colourful graffiti. All the walls are covered, the shop window - everything. I couldn't even begin to imagine what had gone on, I was pretty angry at first and completely in shock. It's almost like Night of the Museum; the whole shop seems to have come alive overnight, and there's no explanation."
Lee believes that he must have left a door open overnight, as there is no evidence of a break-in at all. He added: "There's flowers everywhere, there's writing; just loads of stuff everywhere.
"I have just spent the morning walking around, it seems every time I look somewhere I find something else. It's just endless and the level of detail is just unbelievable." Lee says, at first, he wasn't sure what to do, he didn't know whether to call the police and had no idea what steps to take.
He called his friend, a local Swadlincote artist, who then told him he'd heard that Banksy himself was in Swadlincote last night - although he couldn't say why.
When asked whether he likes the artwork or not, Lee said: "At first I wasn't sure what to think, but the level of detail and quality is pretty impressive, and the fact it could be a Banksy makes it even more interesting. Whoever did it won't be getting a visit from the police, they've done me a favour and I really like it."
Anyone who wants to see the work for themselves can find the colourful shop in West Street, Swadlicote.
