Nominees for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024 and bookies' favourite to win

by · NottinghamshireLive

The annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year is set to take place on Tuesday night, with six high-profile athletes vying for the prestigious trophy. This year has seen the men's England football team reach the Euro 2024 finals, Team GB secure 65 medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and 124 medals at the Paralympics, Manchester City clinch a historic fourth consecutive Premier League title, and a teenage darts player shake up the sport.

Consequently, there are numerous contenders for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. The winner will be determined by a public vote and announced during a live ceremony hosted by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott and Clare Balding.

The ceremony will also honour Sir Mark Cavendish with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement award following his retirement from a record-breaking 19-year career last month. Cavendish, 39, delayed his retirement last winter to attempt a record 35th Tour de France stage win.

Some 16 years after his first victory in his favourite race, Cavendish achieved number 35 in style on stage five into Saint-Vulbas. His 165th win marked the end of an extraordinary career in which Cavendish was crowned world champion – and Sports Personality of the Year – in 2011, won Olympic silver on the track in Rio, became a three-time Madison world champion, and battled illness and depression before enjoying the perfect send-off.

The winner will be announced just before 9pm, with the show broadcasting live from 7pm. Below is the shortlist and a closer look at the nominees, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Jude Bellingham, after his debut season at Real Madrid, has established himself as one of the world's top players. The 21 year old midfielder scored over 20 times for the Spanish giants in his first LaLiga year, contributing to their league title and Champions League victory.

Bellingham was also a key member of England's Euro 2024 squad, which reached the tournament final. He finished third in the Ballon d'Or standings - the highest placement by an Englishman in nearly two decades.

Keely Hodgkinson, one of Team GB's stars at the Paris Olympics, has been unbeatable over 800 metres in 2024, claiming her first Olympic title over the summer. She also retained her European title and set a new British record with the fastest time by a European athlete this century.

Teenager Luke Littler became one of the most talked-about sporting stars in the country after reaching the PDC World Darts Championship final at just 16 years old in January. This was no flash in the pan, as Littler went on to win the Premier League and the Grand Slam of Darts among 10 titles.

He has also been nominated for Young Sports Personality of the Year. Joe Root.

Cricket sensation Joe Root surpassed Sir Alastair Cook's record of 12,472 runs to become the highest-scoring England player in Test history during the first Test against Pakistan in October. He continued his impressive form by scoring a double century and is now nearing the 13,000 run mark after achieving his sixth ton of the year in New Zealand.

Cycling legend Dame Sarah Storey clinched gold medals in both the time trial and road race at the Paris Paralympics. This marked her fifth consecutive win in the time trial and increased her overall gold medal tally to 19.

Despite approaching her 50th birthday by the time of the next Paralympics, Dame Sarah has not dismissed the possibility of competing again.

Triathlete Alex Yee was another standout performer at the Paris Olympic games. His thrilling gold medal win in the Triathlon saw the 26 year old make a last-minute comeback to overtake New Zealand's Hayden Wilde.

Yee also contributed to Britain's bronze medal win in the team relay before securing his first world triathlon title in October.

As for who is tipped to win, current odds from Ladbroke place Keely Hodgkinson as the clear favourite, followed by Luke Littler, Joe Root, Alex Yee, Dame Sarah Storey, and Jude Bellingham.
